On TV: Rise of the Empire
Empire, the hit new show on Fox, seems to be taking everyone by storm these days. It has become a cultural phenomenon and has shed a light on how money changes people and the importance of family.
The show is particularly significant for Black History Month, especially with such a talented cast that includes Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Empire is not about the lives of an average Black family though; it is about a family that lives through music and power. One thing that we don’t get much of on television is the idea of Black people being on top. The Lyons family has it all – in terms of money, fame, and respect.
The music produced within the show is phenomenal and inspiring. It helps to express the feelings and ideas in each episode. The show tackles issues that are not normally portrayed on other network television shows, such as homosexuality, mental illness, and prejudice.
Overall the show is a beautiful representation of the strength and determination it takes to make it to the top and raise a family. This is hard any family but within the world of Empire nothing is easy as you soar your way to the top.
