On the Record: “Don’t Shoot”

August 27 marked the release of The Game’s Don’t Shoot, the most recent collaborative effort by some of rap and R&B’s finest to recognize, defend, and ultimately honor the life and humanity of Michael Brown, an unarmed Ferguson, Missouri teen who was fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson on August 9. The all-star lineup in the order which they are featured includes DJ Khaled, TGT (Tyreese, Ginuwine and Tank), Diddy, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Fabolous, YG, Wale, King Pharaoh, Swizz Beatz, Curren$y, and Problem.
If there was any doubt that this song is indeed a musical forum to critique, inspire, and sound off on the treatment and criminalization of Black bodies within the social, political, and judicial spheres of society, The Game confirms in a Rolling Stone interview that “We care and are inclined to take a positive approach to resolving an issue that has existed since the beginning of mankind and that is racism and hatred towards one another as human beings.”
So what do we get between six minutes, fifteen artists, and one cause? Here is a translation:
- Wale, “Sure the mother feel the pain, but what you famous doing? I’m sure the general population trying to be more active. But when the light finally catches you, you ice challenge.”
Translation: In other words, Wale is sending a reminder that using celebrity status as a platform for social justice should be at the forefront of one’s philanthropy endeavors, as oppose to say, the ALS Challenge, which has little to no racial and gendered context to create tension.
- Yo Gotti, “People stressing, protesting, unity is a blessing. So it’s time we come together, use our voice as a weapon.”
Translation: This verse serves as a statement that we all know to be true based on the work that the leaders of The Civil Rights movements set as an example. This generation needs to realize that we have social and political efficacy in speaking as a unified collective.
- 2 Chainz, “Driving while black, tell me, where am I supposed to go?”
Translation:We are (physically) safe nowhere and getting nowhere safely
- Fabolous,“Yeah, I seen a lot of ice water tossed, and I know it’s for a cause; My only question is, what we doing for the loss of Mike Brown?”
Translation: The ALS Challenge caused people to mobilize and take action, but what are we doing to take action for Mike Brown?
- Curren$y, “And I’m already hearing bout this lopsided jury. Three faces like his, the rest another story.”
Translation: In simple terms, justice does not look promising.
- Problem, “The revolution has been televised. If I sit here and do don’t do nothing, homie, that’s genocide.”
Translation: Not taking action will only help to perpetuate the deliberate mass murdering and dehumanization of black bodies.
- Diddy “Police taking shots and I ain’t talkin’ bout Ciroc. I’m talking bout Emmett Till, I’m talking bout Ezell Ford, I’m talking bout Sean Bell. They never go to jail for Trayvon over Skittles, Mike Brown Cigarillos. History keeps repeatin’ itself, like a Biggie instrumental.”
Translation: Unfortunately Mike Brown is not the only one of our brothers to be gunned down. Respect the lives of Emmett Till, Ezell Ford, Sean Bell, and Trayvon Martin and many others who were victim to police brutality.
Six minutes may not change the whole world but it will make a difference by providing monetary support for The Mike Brown Fund. So do more than listen, support!
