The first Black Student Union was founded during the mid-1960’s at San Francisco State University by students Jimmy Garrett and Jerry Varnado.
How did the idea of the first Black Student Union come about?
Founder Jimmy Garrett did an analysis where he broke the black population of San Francisco State University down into categories: the Negro Student Association, fraternities and sororities, and the Black Nationalists. After finding that he identified with none of these groups and meeting Jerry Varnado, the idea came to life through strategy sessions in their campus library. What started out as a simple idea between two people change into a movement that swept the nation.
